Unit 9 My favorite subject is science.
Period 4 (Section B 2a—2c)
Analysis of the teaching material
This unit is the last unit in Grade 7(Ⅰ). The language goal is to talk about preferences and give reasons about the schedule. This lesson is the fourth period of this unit. This passage is a letter from Yu Mei to Jenny. After learning the letter, students will be able to use the letter to share their school life and the schedule. Students can have a further idea on how to write a letter.
Analysis of students
As a teacher in Yan’an, I am not familiar with the students in Zichang. However, in my opinion, most of them have mastered some reading strategies. Also, the topic in this lesson is close to their school life and they have learned lots of names of subjects and some description words in the first three lessons. I predict that it is not very difficult for us to cooperate.Of course, both the teacher and the students will probably feel kind of nervous.
Teaching aims and demands
1. Knowledge aims
1) Students can memorize some new words and phrases like useful, Mrs., finish, lesson, hour and from...to... .
2) They will be able to talk about their preferences and give reasons about their schedule.
3) By the end of this lesson, they are able to retell the letter.
2. Ability aims
1) To improve students’ ability of guessing before reading, skimming and scanning.
2) To cultivate students’ abilities of summarizing.
3. Moral aim
Everyone should try your best to study hard at all subjects, even if it is not your favorite or it is not interesting.
People are usually busy, but they are really happy at the same time.
Teaching key points
1) Students are able to spell the words in this class and know their meanings.
2) Talk about their preferences and use descriptions to give reasons.
Teaching difficult points
Students can retell the letter.

Cooperative teaching method, Task-based approach, and situational approach.

Students can use independent study method and cooperative study method in class.

Step I . Greetings and warming-up

StepⅡ. Lead-in
Ask students what classes they have today.
The purpose: Use this topic that is close to students’ daily life to arouse students interest. At the same time, present the topic of the letter.
Discuss with partners and use descriptions to describe the classes.
StepⅢ. Reading
1. Pre- reading.
Look at the picture on page53 and make students predict the main idea of the letter.
The purpose: To cultivate students’ ability of prediction and get a reading strategy.
2. While- reading.
1) Skimming. Read the letter and underline the subjects Yu Mei likes and circle the subjects she doesn’t like. At the same time, please find the main idea.

C. Yu Mei’s schedule of Friday
The purpose: Make students to get familiar with the names of subjects and the main idea.
2) Scanning. Read it again and go on answering questions.

Students should not only answer the questions, but they should also give some examples to explain why she is busy. According to the examples, fill in the chart about the subjects. Make students know people are usually busy, but they are really happy at the same time.

The purpose: To develop students ability of summarizing and give them more chances to practice English.
