(2017江西)Dear Mr.Jones,
I expect you may be slightly surprised to receive a letter from someone living as near as your next-door neighbor, but I have to raise a subject so that it will be easier for me to discuss in writing.

While I am on the subject, I am at least grateful to you for keeping your bonfires on the far side of your garden this year. Last year neither I 57 your children had any apples, because the smoke from your bonfire destroyed all the flowers 58 the apples had time to form. I very much hope that next year--for the first time since I came to this village--I shall have my apples, and your children 59 have theirs and that the sight of the line of apple trees will be 60 pride to us both.

(2017江西)Imagine you’ve just arrived in a new place and don’t know anybody yet. Someone smiles at you. You17教育网:www.17jiaoyu.com smile back. Your heart leaps because you realize this person could be a potential new friend. Your imagination runs wild, dreaming of all the fun times you’ll have together, chewing the fat over coffee, lunch and dinner.
You become so excited that in the first few minutes of talking you tell him/her everything—what you had for breakfast, how nervous you’re in this new place, and how you felt when your favorite goldfish died. But then you suddenly realize you’ve gone too far and that there’s no going back. You’ve committed the biggest social crime in the books—you over-shared.
Researchers have found over-sharing your personal information too quickly is a kiss of death to new friendships. A recent article highlights that it’s possible to establish a close bond with someone 17教育网:www.17jiaoyu.comin as little as 45 minutes but this is only possible when the connection is built gradually by each person sharing a little bit more of themselves in turn. This theory was tested in an agreement called “Fast Friends” created by Authur Anopn, a professor from New York. In it, two people were put in a room together with three sets of 12 questions. The questions must be taken in order, with each person taking turns to answer them.
Questions in the first set were mild and only slightly personal, like “Would you like to be famous?” But questions in the next set were more personal, like “What’s your most terrible memory?” The final set of questions was deeply personal, like “When did you last cry in front of another person?” As Anon told, “If you disclose too much too fast, you put someone off.” It’s important that a relationship is built on mutual benefit and for each person to be talking. A key sign you’re over-sharing is when you’re the only one talking.
To be close to someone, it’s also necessary that you’re both willing to open up, but it’s important that each person gives the other space and time to do so. Giving away mutual information gradually is a good choice.

A new study, a project of the researchers from the University of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania, finds the fitness tracker probably does not help with weight loss.
The devices are designed to record your physical activity. They are usually worn around the wrist, where they measure a person’s heart rate. The research team looked at two groups of individuals. The first wore a fitness tracker and took part in health counseling (咨询) with experts to consider the best weight-loss plan. The researchers compared this group with people who only got health counseling.
The study found that those only speaking with the health experts lost nearly 6 kilograms, but those using a fitness tracker lost only 3.5 kilograms. John Jakicic, the lead researcher, questioned the use of electronic devices for weight control in place of “effective behavioral counseling for physical activity and diet. ”
The study involved 470 subjects aged between 18 and 35. Some of them were overweight, while others were considered obese (肥胖的).Over three fourths of the subjects were women. All the subjects were told to increase physical activity and start on a low-calorie diet. They had their weight measured once every six months. After six months, researchers divided the group into two parts: one continued with monthly counseling, while members of the other group were given a fitness tracker. Eighteen months later, both groups “showed significant improvements in fitness, physical activity, and diet,” with no major difference between groups. However, when it came to losing weight, the people who only spoke with experts lost nearly twice as much weight.
Jakicic said, ”the study’s findings are important because effective long-term treatments are needed to address America’s obesity. ” More information is needed, he added,to learn how to best use these devices to change “physical activity and diet behaviors” in adults who want to lose weight.

Thirteen years ago, my brother died. I was in sever sorrow. I remember putting one foot in front of the other—things needed to get done, tasks, completed---but feeling terribly empty inside. Four years later, I has still not gotten a job. My savings had run out.
In 2010, I began to think about rebuilding my life. When I was out walking my dog, Macarena, whom I had bought a year after my brother’s death, I had the feeling that if I could get control over my hair, I could get control over life.
My hair has annoyed me for most of my life. It’s huge, curly and has a life all its own. I have countless hair stories that could easily become horror stories! For example, once my mother took me to get my hair done at a beauty salon and the stylist gave me a cut that looked like a monster!
Now, you see why mastering my hair was so important to me. I watched countless YouTube videos from a community of women who shared hairstyles, which was a do-it-yourself community I was inspired by. As I started to develop a more loving relationship with my hair, I realized my curly hair was teaching me a lot about patience. That shedding (脱落)is an important part of the “letting go” process to make way for the new. Our hair is the only part we can cut off, grow back, color, curl and straighten. The only thing we can change at will is to tell the world who we are.
Now I’m the captain of my ship. But for my hair, I would never have known that.
